The Importance of a Living Resume
It’s important for candidates to have both a standard resume and a living resume. I would call the standard resume, our typical one or two-pager resume. One that we keep updated with our experience and education and training and that we would print out and give to an employer in hard copy. I would call your living resume, your LinkedIn profile.
You want to make sure that your LinkedIn profile is up to date, that it contains the appropriate professional photograph. You want to make sure that your experience and training information is up to date. That living resume would be information that a potential employer could Google and find out information about you if they are interested in having you become a part of their team. So make sure that both your standard resume and your living resume are always up to date. Your Facebook profile, your Twitter profile, all of those social platforms should contain information that’s appropriate for your potential employer.
If you are posting perhaps explicit information or just bad jokes, or some very strong political comments, you may want to reconsider that before you click that button and post it to your Facebook page, or your Twitter page. All of that information is available to the public. Although we tend to believe that our social profiles are confidential. All of that information is searchable online, so please consider what you post when you are seeking employment. So here are some awesome things that you should include in your living resume. If you have completed a project, if you perhaps volunteered for an organization, you want to be able to brag about those accomplishments. Post about your volunteer opportunities. If you’ve done something great in your community, post about that. You want to show all of the positive information and all of the positive activities that you were completing. Something that you would want your employer to see. And remember, when you are considering updating your living resume, showcase your talent online. If you are interested in a particular industry, there is an opportunity for you to showcase your knowledge online. Record videos. Post those videos to your Facebook page. Post those videos to your Twitter feed. Start a YouTube channel and show the world your passion. Show that particular employer that you are targeting your passion. It is an opportunity for you to gain attention. Free attention, by putting out information to the public to showcase what you are passionate about.
